Diet Tips for Workouts?

A diet tips question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: I’ve been working out for years, but I realized if I want to get the size and cut I want I have to improve my diet. I lift weights and run 2 miles 4 days a week. I already have muscles, but I want to get a little bigger and more defined. And I have semi-abs.

How much protein should I have on a workout, and non workout day?

Is it a good idea to have a big protein intake after workout, and very low carbs/fat fot the rest of the day?

Answer: If you’re having problem adding muscle is it extremely unlikely it has anything to do with your diet. And, if you’re having trouble getting cut, you do need to burn fat. Protein is not the answer to either. Your bulking problem is most likely poor training, over training, under training or you’re at your max. Pre and post exercise supplements are all scams. You don’t need them.

Protein is the most misunderstood nutrient in bodybuilding. I don’t have the space to tell you all you need to know so I’ll just hit the high spots and if you need more info, you can message my Yahoo account.

Don’t listen to muscleheads, gym rats, bodybuilders, personal trainers, and even coaches about protein. Most of them believe what decades and $$$$millions in supplement advertising have been telling them…that they need a lot of protein to build muscle. Not true. Here’s how much you need according to the best minds in the world at the US CDC, the people our doctors (in the US) listen to. –> http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/basics/protein.html#How%20much%20protein You can easily get that amount of protein with a glass of milk and a chicken breast or piece of meat per day.

Bodybuilders don’t work as hard as they would like to believe. Construction workers, migrant field hands, movers, UPS drivers, etc. all work much harder every week. And none of those people worry about protein or take supplements for their jobs. They just eat a good diet and their bodies adapt with no problem. A bodybuilder can only work out 10 hours a week at the most because of the recovery time required by the muscles. Marathon runners, boxers, Olympic athletes, Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, etc. all train much harder and they do it without supplements.

Most protein supplements are scams. According to the US National Institute of Health, you should use supplements only when recommended by a doctor. —> http://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/ODS_Frequently_Asked_Questions.aspx#Need That’s good advice because the government does not require testing and the information on the label does not even have to be in the bottle. Supplements have minimal FDA controls so you don’t know what you’re getting when you buy a supplement.

Check out this list of over 60 dangerous supplement products sold with bogus advertising claims which scam-site bodybuilding.com was forced to recall and take off the market –> http://www.usrecallnews.com/2009/11/bodybuilding-com-supplements-recalled-may-contain-steroids.html .

Go here –> http://www.usrecallnews.com/page/2?s=protein and page through the products to see how many protein supplements have been recalled for Samonella poisoning and other reasons.

All you need to make the gains you can is food. There is an abundance of information to prove this point. So, I will give you examples and cite references in the space I have left. Just be sure to ask yourself if you ever saw any good scientific evidence suggesting you need 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight or more. The answer will be no. That’s a huge myth. And, all the naysayers who disagree with me will not have any good science for you. All they’ll have are ads, phony reviews, bogus testimonials, false scientific sounding white papers, bad blogs, scam sites, etc. all paid for by scammers like this one. —> http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5196740n&tag=related;photovideo

Here’s a white paper which debunks the myth of the protein supplement. Note the following excerpt…“At present there is no evidence to suggest that supplements are required for optimal muscle growth or strength gain.”
Ref: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15212752

Here’s one more study to read. Note the excerpt…"Consumption of a recovery drink (whey protein, amino acids, creatine, and carbohydrate) after strength training workouts did not promote greater gains in FFM (Fat free muscle) compared with consumption of a carbohydrate-only drink.”
Ref: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15105028

Here’s another from Live Science. Note the excerpt…“Medical researchers have advised against protein supplements for years for the average person. But many sports trainers continue to push them on amateur athletes simply because they don’t know any better.”
Ref: http://www.livescience.com/health/protein-supplements-100202.html#

Here’s what Consumer Reports had to say —> Ref: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/2010/july/food/protein-drinks/overview/index.htm

If you have any doubts about the citations and references above, talk to the person who understands best how your body works….your doctor.

Diet/Exercise Tips and Advice?

This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: I’m 17, female, 5′4" and 240 pounds. I’m well aware I’m not thin, lol.
For the past few months I’ve decided to take action and actually work at
losing a lot of weight. A nice dream goal would be to get down to 130 or so.

I was wondering if anyone could please give me some dieting tips, advice, recipes
or anything that would aide me in this. I’m honestly confused when it comes to dieting
and eating, so any information at all would help me a lot.

For exercising, my routine is:
Dance-Cardio warm-up for 15 minutes.
25 crunches, 25 bike twists, 25 leg raises. (repeat 3 more times in between weights).

10 lb weights I use for:
50 bicep curls
50 tricep kick-backs
50 chest flies
50 back flies

Then 30 more minutes of dance-cardio.
And then the ab workout repeated 3 more times.
A LOT of stretching afterwards. And I do yoga at least 3 times a week.

Ideas, thoughts, opinions are all appreciated. I’m trying to learn as much as I can.

Answer: Your exercise program looks great. The cardio will help burn the calories while the strength training will help maintain the muscle. I would increase the weight you use though as 50 repetitions in one set is far to high. Using a heavier weight and do only 10-15 repetitions for 3 sets would be better. You will not become "muscley" as you will be restricting calories and can not build muscle in a calorie restricted state. Your goal is to maintain the muscle you have, as lean mass is the only thing we can do to maintain or raise our metabolism.

1. Restrict your calories. 1250-1500 is suffiecient.

2. Avoid sugar and fast food.

3. Consume lean meats and vegetables (no rice, pasta or potatos). This should be the bulk of your diet.

4. Snacks should consists of fruit and nuts.

5. Its okay to treat yourself occasionally (once or twice a week). Just make sure the treat isn’t excessive. An evil 300-500 calories twice a week is completely fine.

6. Consistency. The only way to fail is to stop.

Everyone cheats and everyone has days that they don’t want to work out. Falling short is fine, we all do it. You won’t "ruin" your diet, because it’s about lifestyle management, not about an indiscretion you had one day.

Im Trying to Dieting and Diets What Are Some Tips I Can Do to Burn the Most Calories?

What’s this week’s diet tips question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: also if i go running and wear a backpack filled with weights wll i be able to lose more and burn faster?
Answer: I stuck relegiously to it for 3 months and lose 7 pound. I have quite a lot to lose so i thought i would lose more. The main problem was i ended up with too much uric acid in the blood and now my joints are painful but im going to try fast tract hypnosis. Keeping my fingers crossed. My friend also tried it and only lost 3 pound in a month.
edit this is something i read
I should know. I’m an idiot.

I bought the Fat Loss 4 Idiots program a few years ago (Actually, I think it was called "Weight Loss 4 Idiots" then). I was tempted by their claim that I could "lose 9 pounds in 11 days" by "eating foods that I choose". I was excited to fork over my money and begin my journey to weight loss success.

What happened? Well, when I tried to select my foods, I was presented with a list of food choices, many of which I didn’t like. Despite what they’ll tell you in the advertisements, this is a high protein low carb diet. And I’m a vegetarian. There were many "fake meat" products to choose from, but I don’t like those either.

Still, I thought that I might be able to substitute foods that I did like and somehow apply the principle of the diet. I didn’t like what I saw. Other review sites will tell you that you get to eat "4 square meals a day" on the Fat Loss 4 Idiots program. But this isn’t entirely true. You do get to eat four meals a day. However, the "meals" consist of one food only. How much of any one food can a person eat? Not much.

What about all the additional information that comes with the program? There was not a single piece of information on that site which I hadn’t already heard from a free source.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots only works because it is a very low calorie, low carb diet. However, it’s just that. A diet. It doesn’t teach you how to properly eat so that you don’t gain weight when you go off the diet. It’s likely that this is just a temporary solution.
The weight will come back.

The reality is that losing weight permanently isn’t easy and it doesn’t happen overnight. I know that’s not a popular sentiment, but it’s the truth. You are much better off making healthy changes over time that become a permanent part of your life.

Shannon Tani is a former fattie, who weighed over 220lbs. She has currently lost over 70lbs. One day she realized that people would rather hear dieting advice from someone who’s "been there, done that" than a boring old doctor who’s never been fat a day in his life. So she started the website Better Off Fat to share her experiences and ideas.

What Are Some Cheap Dieting Tips for a Busy Vegetarian Woman?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I’m looking to shed a few pounds. I already work out 5-6 days a week. I do anywhere from 40-90 minutes of cardio, and I work out with weights 3-4 times a week. I’m doing well with my diet now, but once college starts again I’m not going to have as much time to prepare anything in advance.

With little money, a full day of college, a full night of homework, a husband, and a strong desire to get healthier, what can I do to maintain this and get proper, complete (and meatless) nutrition while on-the-go?

Note: I do not eat eggs, or most things that have eggs in them. I do not drink milk, but I have no problem with dairy products. I just don’t like the taste of milk.
Haha, starving does work, but it’s horrible for your metabolism, and it’s not wise for someone who works out! ;)

Answer: Five words for you:

Alissa’s Raw and Living Food
