Does Anyone Have Any Tips to Help Me Stick to My Diet While Keeping My Husband from Starving?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of diet tips. Let’s take a look:

Question: I have been married almost a year to a man with an incredibly fast metabolism. He recently got a new job working 12 or so hours a day. His job is physically demanding so he is usually very hungry when he comes home. I love cooking for him, and I make him hearty meals.

Now the problem…
Before we were married I was able to stick to a pretty restrictive and healthy diet that allowed me to keep my extra weight off. (I struggled with my weight years ago.) Now that I am married I cook heartier meals and we have food around I never would have eaten before. I have gained nearly ten pounds, and I don’t want to gain more. Ideally I would lose what I’ve gained.

We have very different needs as far as quantity, and I know I should work on portion control.

I am looking for some good, practical tips to help me keep from gaining more without making my husband suffer.

Answer: Portion control is definitely the best solution. Remember that he does not have the problem. So, controlling your portion may take some practice (you can do it!!) but you will succeed.

For example, if you are cooking chicken breasts, cut one in half and put one half in the fridge for another meal, cook the small one for you and cook an uncut full one for him. Measure your side dishes like rice. Give yourself half a cup and he gets one cup.

Increase your portion of vegetables or green garden salad to fill the void if the visual of smaller servings bugs you. You can still enjoy a meal together, you may have a salad in front of you for after your regular meal, he may choose not too, but the point is to be together.

He will support your efforts and you will be able to feel satisfied.

Diet Tips, Low Metabolism?

What’s this week’s diet tips question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I have a low metabolism and no matter what I do I can’t lose weight. Lately I’ve been eating less for lunch and breakfast because all I’m doing is sitting in a chair waiting for class to be over, I don’t really have time to excercise but I do have a excercise bike sitting in my corner that I can use, its just so boring. So any advice on what I can eat and stuff?
PS the only veggie I like that’s not like corn or potato is spinach. And I hate salad dressing so I eat like dried strawberrys and almond flakes on it
Answer: Exercise:
I have lost 35 pounds and kept it off for a year and a half. I recommend running for at least twelve minutes a day, also if you want a really good workout, bring 3 pound weights for each arm and run with them. You can burn twice as much calories by doing so.
Diet:
My most helpful tip for a healthy diet is to ALWAYS have something in your stomach, and never let yourself go hungry. This helps speed up your metabolism, so you burn more calories easily. I know some people may say to have a big breakfast. However, if you have too much for breakfast, you can stretch out your stomach and then end up eating more than you thought you ate. If you are about to burn lots of calories, I recommend you have a reasonable amount of calories and protein for breakfast. If you just sit around all day, I recommend you just have a small breakfast, and have small- but nutritional snacks. Such as: weight watchers ice cream sandwiches and popsicles, non-fat yogurt, PRETZEL m&ms (I like these because they only have 150 calories, and 5 grams of fat), ice cold water, rice cakes, hard boiled eggs (w/o the yolk), slices of mozzerella cheese, and sugar-free gum. (I like to have gum when I have had too many calories that day and I can’t afford to have any more calories, so I just have gum which is only five calories.)

Extra Tips:
Avoid mayo, olive oil, butter, and peanut butter. These foods are really great ways of getting fat really quickly. Always count your calories, and ALWAYS check the labels on everything you are about to eat or buy. If there are no labels on it, and you know it is known as being bad for you, then stay AWAY from it.
Hope I helped (:

What Are Some Cheap Dieting Tips for a Busy Vegetarian Woman?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I’m looking to shed a few pounds. I already work out 5-6 days a week. I do anywhere from 40-90 minutes of cardio, and I work out with weights 3-4 times a week. I’m doing well with my diet now, but once college starts again I’m not going to have as much time to prepare anything in advance.

With little money, a full day of college, a full night of homework, a husband, and a strong desire to get healthier, what can I do to maintain this and get proper, complete (and meatless) nutrition while on-the-go?

Note: I do not eat eggs, or most things that have eggs in them. I do not drink milk, but I have no problem with dairy products. I just don’t like the taste of milk.
Haha, starving does work, but it’s horrible for your metabolism, and it’s not wise for someone who works out! ;)

Diet Tips? I Have Lots of Questions?!!?

A tough diet tips question this week. Let’s dive straight in

Question: Hi to everyone reading this! Ok so Ive been on a diet for like 3-4 weeks already, I got to be honest it aint easy!, ive lost 14 pounds so far with sum pills that boost my metabolism. I have a friend who suggested i go to the gym for like 2-3 hours everyday! I was like omg thats too much for me considering i started weighing 252 and now im at 238 im 5′9". I decided to go to the gym everyday for an hour mon-fri, I of course started geting muscle and condition or whatever, but my bones started hurting after 3 weeks, so lets say i would do the treadmill for 30 mins at a 4.0 speed, after my bones started hurting i could only do half the time. After that I noticed it wasnt my muscles but my bones because i had difficulty walkin, sitting etc. I decided like a week ago to keep on my diet but give the gym a 4 day rest. and today i went and i felt really good, i could do even more, my bones didnt hurt or anything, I just felt like wow u know? My concern was that if i took a break from the gym i would loose condition or muscle, but i guess not? IF UR A HEALTH INSTRUCTOR OR KNOW ALOT BY EXPIRIENCE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I COULD IMPROVE ON OR TIPS IDEAS PLEASE, My goal is to weigh 165 . So this is my diet:
In the mornings like at 7 am or 8, i drink my pill, then I go to the gym for an hour, then i come home and i always eat a fiberous fruit, like a green apple, and then a little of whatever is for breakfast, no bread or soda, I try to satanise that. I drink lots of water and i pee soo much. for lunch i try to eat portions and at the most 2 tortillas, after that i dont really eat at nights, but the bad thing is that on sundays after church i have so many cravings i slip very little not a whole lot. well thanx for reading, id appreciate tips :)
Answer: You should definitely continue going to the gym at least 4 days a week. You should give yourself one day off at least every week. The key is to not exercise the same group of muscles every day. Give your muscles time to heal up or they won’t be able to handle the stress from everyday. If you are mostly doing cardio and not strength training, I suggest you do one day where you really push yourself and the next day go light and easy. A great method I have found when it pertains to doing cardio is finding intensities for yourself on a scale of 1 to 10. Level 1 is like laying down or sleeping and level 10 is the absolute max output your body can do. So when you start on the treadmill(it’s much easier with machines since you can set the speed/resistance!) or an elliptical, etc, start yourself on your level 5 intensity. That could be just a regular walking pace or maybe a slower walking pace. After two minutes go up a level in intensity(either by setting the machine a little harder or walking faster) to level 6. Then after that minute go to level 7, then another minute to level 8 and another minute to level 9. So at level 9 you should really be feeling it and you should really be pushing yourself. After one minute at level 9 go back down to level 6. Then work your way up again minute after minute to level 9. After doing this for a set period of time(I usually do 20 minutes total because it is such an intense workout), when you have 3 minutes left you should be at level 9, then two minutes left try to strive for level 10. You might get there or you might not. It really depends on your energy level for the day. But always try to do it, you might get there when you thought you couldn’t! And then the final minute you should go back to level 5 for a cooldown. You can continue doing a cooldown if you want, a lot of machines have that automatic 5 minute cooldown period. I love this method in cardio and I find it highly effective because it doesn’t allow your body to get used to the exercise. As you get faster and stronger you will have new intensity levels so just move them up as you progress. You can’t outgrow this because of that.

You should definitely do weight training at least 3 days a week too. You should break up the workouts into two or more different groups. An example is doing all upper body on one day and then you can do lower body the next day or a few days later. As long as you give your body days of rest in between workouts you will be fine. The more muscle you have the more calories and fat you will burn. You will also feel better and feel like you can do more in the gym and at home too.

I also suggest eating 4-6 small meals a day and make sure most of it is protein, complex carbs, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, low fat dairy, fish, and lean meats. Protein is a huge helper in weight loss because it makes you feel fuller for a long period of time and it helps your muscles. The healthier the food you eat the less you’ll want the junk. Don’t keep it in the house and it will be easier to stay on track.
