Vegetarian Diet Tips and Exercise Please HELP!!!?

What’s this week’s diet tips question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I’m 19 and know I’m a little over weight. I’m wondering about tips for helping loose weight. I have been trying to cut down on carbs and eat smaller portions but there hasn’t been much change. Plus being vegetarian its harder to cut out carbs. Any advice on changing my diet. Also wondering what exercise I can do to help me lose weight especially around my hips, tummy and upper arms. Desperate for advice please help!
Answer: I’m vegetarian too (don’t listen to the fish oil thing, if you don’t eat fish like me!).

Anyway the thing that really helped me lose 70 pounds last year was switching what type of food I ate, not cutting down.

Whole grains are your friend. Anything made with white carbs - ditch it. Yes, this means white bread, pizza, potatoes, anything sugary (ANYTHING). You’d be surprised how much stuff has this nasty processed sugar in it. If it says corn syrup, especially high fructose corn syrup, don’t put that stuff in your mouth!

I recommend trying out the G.I. diet which basically focuses on whole grains and less processed food and is great for a vegetarian to follow. For a start, double up your vegetable portions and squeeze some of those carbs off the plate. Make sure you’re getting enough protein - it’s tough as a veggie. Try out bean dishes, tofu (it can taste nice, trust me), tempeh, soy products and eggs/milk in moderation. Omega-3 fortified eggs are especially good for us veggies. Also don’t forget to keep some healthy fats in there such as avocados (never more than 1/4 at a time), nuts and olive oil.

Spot reduction of fat is unfortunately a myth but you can work on the underlying muscles nonetheless. Core exercises such as yoga, Pilates or good ol’ crunches will help strengthen your abs. Bellydancing, burlesque, or the same core work will help around your hips. Arm exercises - use weights, there are some great workouts you can follow online with just a set of dumbbells at home, or you can join a gym and get into kettlebell and TRX workouts which I adore for their ability to make my arms look less like dough!

Cardiovascular exercise such as aerobics (legs bums and tums class!) or running is also great for helping raise your metabolic rate so you burn more calories, and just getting rid of fat all round. Look how thin marathon runners are ;-)

Ultimately the best thing is to see a personal trainer or dietician and get some real analysis of what you currently eat and where you can make changes, but I do recommend the G.I. diet for learning a bit more about good and bad sources of carb, protein and fat. I lost about 30 pounds on it last year (the other 40 were on LighterLife a programme similar to Medifast, I recommend this if you want fast results but it is NOT a healthy and sustainable way to lose weight, it also tastes disgusting whereas good healthy low-GI food tastes amazing.)

  3. Uh, dear, WE ARE ALL THERE WITH YOU!!!!! It’s an almost impossible balancing act. The biggest thing you can do for yourself is to find exercises, outdoor activities you enjoy doing. I started going out into nature and hiking 3-6 miles. I enjoy being out there, love being in nature and don’t mind the exercise. This is the best of all worlds because this is something I enjoy and can maintain!!!!!
That’s what you need. Roller blading, trampoline, walking, biking, soccor, etc, etc, etc,

  5. To really be healthy your body needs animal protein to support proper brain function. Just eat proper portions and exercise regularly, you should be fine. Walking is the easiest and safest form of exercise and you have been doing that for years and years. Toss in some wrist and ankle weights for an added work out.

  6. well first off carbs can help at first but after a while without carbs you dont have the energy to workout and crave it worse..what you need to do it cut out THE BAD CARBS ..the white ones(at least mostly)
so when you have bread or pasta ect. make sure its whole grain/wheat ect…
things with carbs should also be high fiber to balance it out…

also Im not sure what you like and what thngs your eating since carbs is a wide variety..but they make noodles out of tofu..their super low calories and low carb…so maybe try those their ok tasting…(I hate tofu but I can eat them sometimes)

you need to walk or jog whichever you can handle for AT LEAST 30 minutes a day 3 days a week..then work up to 5 when you can..and up to an hour until you lose the weight be sure to continue at least 3 days aweek after though..

you can firm up but if theres fat there it does no good so CARDIO CARDIO CARDIO..until you lose the weight then if you stomach is jiggly or theres extra skin on your arms come back and ask…..

it sucks but it takes time to see any change..try on your tighest outfit(jeans or whatever) and then every 10 days try them on..even with a slight change ..even if they dont fit you will notice them getting closet and closet…

veggie stir fry is a delicious way to have veggies that are tasty…and smoothies yummyyy

  7. Hi! I’m holistic, so I don’t eat a whole lot of meats anyways - I just try to stick with whatever has the least preservatives. Anyways, I’m 19 too and in the same situation. I’ve lost a few inches so far by walking to class instead of the bus, eating less more times a day to help my metabolism (that one really helps), and drinking water when I get a craving (hunger can be mistaken for thirst). You know, just a few changes that add up to a larger difference.

Lately, I’ve been having nature valley granola bars as "snacks" when I need to eat between small meals. They’re sweet enough to enjoy and take so long to chew that I’m not hungry anymore by the time I finish it!

    Hope some of this helps.
