Raw Feeding Menu Help for 5 Pound, 8 Year Old Female Chihuahua..and Tips to Ease Her into the Diet?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I currently feed my dog Canadea All Stages…I heard that RAW Feeding is better? Better than what I feed her you think? If so, can you prescribe a good RAW diet for her please? I have joined some yahoo raw feeding groups but all the groups seem to cater to big dogs. By the way, I brush her teeth daily with CANINE toothpaste. I heard if I fed raw that would not be a problem…also can someone tell me how much it costs to feed a raw diet so I know how much to expect to spend monthly? thank you.

ALSO: if I feed her raw and she licks me..will i have to wash my hand now every time i handle her? and how do I get the dog to stay in one spot rather than drag her raw food everywhere?
My Dog is doing really well on Candea. She has nice coat, more active and no doggy smell. But I want to switch her to Raw because i heard that it will be even better for her?

Answer: I’m not a believer in raw feeding, and it certainly isn’t any better than what you are now using. If you truly think you’d rather feed raw, please do it right, go back to the yahoogroup rawfeeding list to make sure you understand the nutritional needs of your dog. My vet has had bad experiences with dogs fed raw, so she doesn’t recommend it, but you should discuss this with your own vet before jumping into this method. It isn’t easy doing it right
Check out this site for a wonderful pamphlet written by a gal that has done a great deal of research and work with feeding dogs all different ways;

Her latest book Optimal Nutrition is in use at the Ohio school of veterinary medicine. Pretty good credentials I think.

  1. A prey model raw diet in MY honest opinion is the best diet you could feed your dog.

    Once you switch to raw you shouldn’t need to brush her teeth.

    I have no idea, with such a small dog lol But I spend about $20 a month on 40lbs of meat for 3 cats and a dog. My dog is a lot larger so you’ll be spending a lot less. I’m always looking for deals, I won’t pay over $1.60/lb. Depending on where you live you may spend more.

    You want to feed 2% of her ideal body weight. 80% muscle meat 10%bone 5% liver 5%organ

    Start out with chicken for 2 wks then add different meats. You want a wide variety. Most common I feed is pork, beef, and chicken.

    Go back to those gorups, there’s small dog owners!
